Siktogeja thaba baha hinapay-Black Wolf comes over the horizon and Mnoga chogan Wachogi-yah- wise buffalo are his given names and rights of his knowledge to carry on the teachings of his ancestors to the next generations. These names are not only his names, but they hold a position of responsibility to his names for which he is accountable to. These names have been earned by Barry Wesley and have been awarded to him by his good deeds and dedication to land and its people.

From the First People’s Oral Knowledge of Iyithka winchasta education society, he completed his learnings from Language Chiefs, Animal and Hunting Chiefs, Song and Dance Chiefs and Land Use knowledge Chiefs in which he was awarded with Eagle Feathers of completion. In his practice of 30 years and more of Iyethka winchasta education, he has been working with the current leadership of his Nation to build and bridge Iyethka winchasta society policy to English speakers in surrounding communities in various projects. He is an interpreter of his language to English for his Elders and his community. Language interpretation makes him an asset to the Nation as this skill is not an easy task.
With his practice of language integration to policy in English, Barry Wesley has been invited to sit on many advisory boards and committees in Alberta and through out Canada, to ensure the content and knowledge is accurate to Stoney – Iyithka winchasta history and culture. His part to advise non-Iyethka winchasta of Iyethka winchasta education is one of his passions to educate others about his people’s knowledge and history. He has been on many panels for discussions and has been requested to be part of “Story Telling” series to share stories about his people and the land.

Later in his life he was given a gift of the Pipe Ceremony to be a committed educator on Iyethka winchasta knowledge of land use and to be a steward of the land. He now has this second job given to him by the Elders and Iyethka winchasta education society to educate the youth in Traditional Knowledge Youth camps and many Traditional knowledge seasonal ceremony teachings throughout the year. He is Iyethka winchasta certified educator and has been a Language and Culture teacher at the Bighorn Ta-Otha community school. After completing his contract with the school, he continued to answer the request of, off reserve schools in the municipality of Clear Water County. Barry Wesley teaches 1-day sessions to high school students and Junior High School students at the request of Provincial educators that require Indigenous knowledge part of their curriculum.

Barry Wesley is a proud father of his three children and grandfather of his grandson and dedicated husband to his wife Paula Smallboy. Together they have been to many Pow-wow dances, and many hockey games. Barry is a dedicated hockey player and head coach of the game. He was the head coach for all his children’s hockey teams. A pow -wow singer in drum songs with his drum group Wild Spirit singers winning in various competitions in North America.
